Tony Dungy has decided to step down as the Indianapolis Colts head football coach. Dungy spent seven years in Indianapolis and 6 years in Tampa Bay. He won Super Bowl 41 with the Colts, but since then has thought more and more of retirement to pursue work with All-Pro Dads, the prison ministry and becoming a mentor to teenagers and young adults. His 18-year old son committed suicide in December of 2005 and since then Dungy has thought about making a difference in places larger than a football fie! ld. This optimizes the man Tony Dungy is. His players loved him, his fellow coaches love and respect him, in fact I am
willing to bet there are very few people in the world who do not think highly of Dungy. His family moved back to Tampa Bay about a year ago, and this is another factor into his retirement. Dungy has 148 career wins, a 7-6 postseason record, is the only coach to lead his team to 10 straight playoff appearances, and 6 straight seasons winning 12 games or more. Tony was also the first black head c! oach to win a Super Bowl. Dungy's impact on the NFL was a grea! t one an d football is losing one of its best today. Colts assistant head coach Jim Caldwell will become Indy's new head coach.
The Denver Broncos surprisingly cut ties with long time head coach Mike Shanahan a few weeks ago and now they have their new head man. 32-year old Josh McDaniels the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots. McDaniels has been credited with the development of Matt Cassel and furthering Tom Brady's development. The Broncos saw how Mike Tomlin revitalized Pittsburgh after Bill Cowher left and ! are hoping McDaniels can do the same. In fact, Denver CB Dre' Bly and others have already made comments on their excitement
. Yet another of Bill Belichick's tree will begin his own journey in the NFL. McDaniels quickly hired former 49ers HC Mike Nolan as his defensive coordinator. McDaniels reportedly beat out Minnesota's defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, another young guy, for the job. In the end, this is a great hire. McDaniels is a good choice to work with QB Jay Cutler to further his development.! Nolan is a solid d-coordinator. It is very important for youn! g and 1s t time head coaches to surround themselves with very good assistants. Nolan is a good start. The Detroit Lions, St. Louis Rams, New York Jets, and Oakland Raiders are all still without head coaches. The Cleveland Browns hired Eric Mangini, the San Francisco 49ers retained Mike Singletary after he was their interim head coach down the stretch, and the Seattle Seahawks still look as if they will promote Jim Mora Jr. with Mike Holmgren's departure.
