A day before the Washington Nationals officially start the 2008 season against the Atlanta Braves, a new chapter in the team and city's sports history was written last night as Nationals Park opened for business.
After three seasons toiling at old Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Northeast Washington, 25,000 fans, almost all decked in red and blue, finally got to see the $611 million dollar stadium with their own eyes.
Instead of looking at renderings of Nationals Park, or seeing it from the outside looking in, fans got ! to finally see what the excitement was about.
Let's just say the new park is a world away from their old home.
Fans gazed the entire concourse of the stadium, and looked at the team's new home in amazement.
Between looking at the super huge scoreboard, a field with crisp green grass that will only be used for baseball with the curly "W" engraved in it, and a great view of the action wherever you sat, Nationals Park was a winner with those in attendance.
Well, I have not done much Orioles news as of late because...
a) my real job has taken over for the last month...
b) there frankly has not been a lot to talk about as we are waiting for the season to end...
However, I took a quick look at Pete Schmuck's blog on the Sun site, and if you'll be in the area on November 12th, there's an O's related rally taking place.
I have no idea if I'll be there, as I have no idea what my job will entail from day to day...
We've done a little poking around and determined that some of the posters and bloggers around here are pretty smart. Indeed, the rally will be to launch the new uniforms, which will feature some other changes along with the return of the geographical designator on the out-of-town jerseys.
The Orioles are pretty mum on this because they don't want to let the cap out of the bag, so to speak, but there are rumors they've come up with a new, fiercer bird logo. That would be interesting. I've included the current ornithological bird logo on the right. I guess you could try to imagine it as a blood-thirsty, talon-baring, hawk-like creature, but we're getting way ahead of ourselves. The bird makeover is just a rumor.
I'll looking forward to seeing this -- and why not, it will be cool to see what new the jerseys look like and as well what surprises are in store.
I've never been ! one to be real big on uniforms (unless they are ungodly hideou! s), but I'm curious to see the roadies.
It looks like New York -- as some thought -- may have swept him away with a last minute surprise (or they just kept things hush-hush). The deal is contingent on the slugger passing a physical, and it looks like Boras might have pulled out an old card -- going to the Yankees for a last minute deal (can anyone say Johnny Damon?).
Obviously spending a ton of money doesn't necessarily mean a World Series or the playoffs; however, one must think the Yankees are indeed the favorites now to take the AL East title.
I guess a year where ! New York finished in third place, plus a new ballpark have turned them to revert to opening up the checkbook and spending freely.
For a team asking for more money to subsidize their ballpark, they sure can dish it out. My lord, let's hope they don't ask for a bailout -- sheesh. It's time for a salary cap of some sort and may he never win a World Series.
They have given out $400 plus million worth of contracts to three players, and you wonder why teams like Minnesota, Oakland, Kansas City and the Indians have continuous turnover of players.
I'm curious to see how Oriole fans will react to the news, and I'll be turning on the radio to hear the carnage.

The MLB Network is nothing short of great, and this late evening, I caught a re-broadcast of "30 Camps In 30 Days" that profiled the Baltimore Orioles.
Well, the broadcast was very comprehensive and needless to say they went over everything under the sun with the Orioles. I sat in bed with laptop in hand and just bulleted the pertinent items.

After taking two of four from Kansas City, the Orioles travel north to face the Yankess for three games, and then head south on a quasi-road trip down 295 to face the woeful Washington Nationals this weekend.
The Orioles have run into the Yankees at the wrong time, sadly. New York is in the midst of a six-game winning streak, and Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, and Johnny Damon have all found their stroke as of late and are now one hell of a dangerous squad. Furthermore, Baltimore faces C.C. Sabathia in game one of the series and as we all know, he touched up on him during Opening Day; however, he dominated us only a few weeks ago at Camden Yards.
If the Orioles were going to lose on Tuesday, one hoped that they could have given a little more fight. David Hernandez and the Oriole bullpen got lit up in Boston to the tune of six home runs -- some of them quite majestic -- and ten runs; therefore, at the end of the night, one had to avert their eyes as the Orioles lost to the Red Sox, 10-0. With the loss, the Baltimore Orioles -- at one time, one of the crown jewels of Major League Baseball -- clinched their 12th losing season.
Clay Buchholz -- who started the game for Boston, whose struggles in 2009 have been well noted, went seven shutout inningd, struck out five and allowed three hits on the night. Meanwhile, Davod Hernandez got hit early, often, lasted 2 2/3 innings and gave up six runs.
The offense was non-existent, the pitching was terrible, and with a! Boston team looking forward to the playoffs, they decided to have open season on the Birds. I guess at this point for us as fans hoping to see the Orioles perhaps put a dent into the playoff hopes of some and play some competitive baseball, the goal now is to not see the team cross the 100-loss mark.

Boston (1) vs Montreal (8) I understand that it's the playoffs and this is a big time rivalry and the Canadiens have had the Bruins number in the past, but I don't see the Bruins losing this series. I have trouble seeing this one go any further than five games. This has the possibility of being the only sweep of the first round. Plus, it doesn't help that Tim Thomas has been phenominal this season, while Carey Price has struggled big time. Prediction: Bruins in 5
Washington (2) vs. Rangers (7) For this series I'll have a more details preview tomorrow before the game. For now I'll say that my heart says Rangers in 7 but my brain says Capitals in 6.
Devils (3) vs. Carolina (6) Carolina looks very similar to the team that won the Cup a few seasons ago. Cam Ward has been one of the ho! ttest goalies down the stretch and Staal and Brind'Amour have gotten much, much better in the final month. It's always hard to rule out the Devils, especially when they have Brodeur as their last line of defense. Six weeks ago the Devils were my favorite to win the East based on the way they were playing. But, that streak they were on has turned sour and coming into the home stretch the Devils looked bad. If they can regain that form then they'll win the series but if they play like they did down the strecth then the home ice advantage won't even help them knock off the Canes. Prediction: Hurricanes in 6
Penguins (4) vs. Flyers (5) The Flyers blew their chance to have home ice advantage in the first round by losing to the Rangers in the last game of the season....that could really come back to bite them in the ass! The Penguins were 4-2 in the season series and I can see this se! ries going the same way. The Flyers are another team with a ho! t/cold g oalie in Biron and we'll have to wait and see which Marty Biron shows up. The Penguins have some serious scoring threats up front led by Crosby and Malkin but the Flyers may have more depth at forward, they are one of only two teams with four 30 goal scorers. Not to mention, Jeff Carter who was the second-leading goal scorer this season in the NHL. Prediction: Penguins in 7
There is belief the Maple Leafs have been zeroing in on New York Rangers defenceman Wade Redden and forward Peter Schaefer of the Boston Bruins.
Schaefer, 31, was buried in the minors by the Bruins last season because of salary cap concerns. He has one more year on his contract at $2.3-million (U.S.). Redden, 32, was signed to a six-year, $39-million unrestricted free-agent deal last summer, and the Rangers would not be averse to moving him.
The Leafs have plenty of salary cap room – $10-million to $13-million depending on the contract given to restricted free-agent forward Mikhail Grabovski – to accommodate both players.
But if the Leafs have interest in! Redden, it means Burke must be serious about trading away either Tomas Kaberle or Pavel Kubina. The two veteran defenceman have no-trade contracts, but a window in which they can be traded opens when the draft commences on Friday.
"I'm going [to Montreal] to listen to offers," said Burke.
I'm not buying it. No one has interest in Wade Redden. I would understand if the purpose was to clear cap space by trading Kaberle and/or Kubina - but from a Toronto standpoint this trade makes no sense unless they are getting a lot in return (like top draft pick(s) or prospects). According to NHLNumbers, Kubina has only one more year left on his contract ($5M) and Kaberle only two more years, each season making $4.25M. Wade Redden on the other hand is under contract for the next 5 seasons and has $31M remain! ing on his contract. The only thing that Brian Burke and the L! eafs are interested in is the fact that they see a potential chance to absolutely rip off the Rangers by accepting Redden's contract. Hey, the Rangers need him off the books, so whatever it takes, I guess.
According to a Pittsburgh Sports website today, these are the latest rumors in Ranger world. Considering the source, read this with as much skepticism as you like. I'm not one for posting stuff like this usually, but it's a Friday in August and frankly I'm sick of the lack of hockey talk and news.
The New York Rangers continue to show a strong interest in Stars center Brad Richards but the two sides are not close on a deal.
The two sides have agreed on Brandon Dubinsky being involved but there's a major snag in the trade talks.
The Rangers are trying to move Michal Rozsival in any deal for Richards. The Stars have no interest in Rozsival.
While Richards is at the top of the Rangers wishlist, the Rangers have reached out to free agent forwards Vinny Prospal and Todd Bertuzzi.
I still don't buy the whole Rangers! are interested in Brad Richards rumor.
I'm sure that most of these rumors are being generated because Dubinsky has yet to sign a new contract. When he gets that done (that's right, it's not an if, but a when) these rumors will finally go away. If Sather refused to include Dubinsky in a trade for Heatley what makes you think he'll trade him for Richards?
As for the other two names mentioned, neither surprise me and especially at the numbers that Bertuzzi should be getting ($1.2M - $1.7M) I wouldn't be horrified if they brought him in. Prospal on the other hand is going to cost a lot more and is more of the same type of player that's already on the roster.

Spurs newboy Paul Stalteri is convinced Tottenham can emulate his former club Werder Bremen in their bid to turn a squad of talented youngsters into a European force.
The 27-year-old Canadian international joined Tottenham on a free transfer and can't wait to begin his career. He is also looking forward to helping them finish in the top 6th of the Premiership.
Werder Bremen have been impressive in the Champions League over the past couple of campaigns and Stalteri told the official Spurs website: "It was a building process that took two or three years and last year we got to the stage where we had a great side and won the league and cup. It was a fantastic feat and this year was good as well with getting to the second stage of the ! Champions League. We were right there again but just missed that bit of luck I definitely hope to bring a winning attitude to the team."
Stalteri can play in a number of positions as he went on to say: "I play predominantly at full-back - mostly on the right - but I do like playing in midfield, which is where I play for the national team.
"Sometimes it is fun changing positions and don't particularly have a favourite one.
"I definitely like getting up and down but it all depends on how a particular game is going. I love to go forward and help with attacking, but one of my big strengths is defending.
"I am hopefully a good two-way player who can get involved in the attacks while doing defensive duties as well."

I've never seen John Bostock play. In fact, I didn't even know he existed until a couple of months ago. After watching this video of him (he's 6 years old in this clip), he sure as hell looks like he's got potential. Just watch him go! He's the little guy who outruns the entire team.

Former Spurs right-back, Pascal Chimbonda, is nearing a loan move back to Tottenham after his agent, Roger Boli, made the following comments within the French tabloid, L'Equipe;
"We have contacted Tottenham Hotspur and they are open to having Pascal back for the rest of the season; not in a permanent deal as some have said".

SEVILLE — Tawaran AC Milan sebesar 14 juta euro (sekitar Rp 200,3 miliar) untuk membeli Luis Fabiano dari Sevilla ditolak. Penolakan itu disampaikan Jumat atau Sabtu (4/7) dini hari WIB. Fabiano sendiri menyatakan sangat tertarik bergabung dengan AC Milan. Bahkan, itu sudah menjadi impiannya sejak lama. Namun, kedua klub tak menemui kesepakatan. Sevilla mengakui, pihaknya memang baru saja menolak tawaran 14 juta euro dari AC Milan. Namun, klub itu masih bersedia diajak negosiasi dengan harapan Milan akan menaikkan harganya. Fabiano ! masih terikat kontrak dengan Sevilla sampai 2011. Jika ada yang membayar masa kontraknya, Sevilla menetapkan harga 32 juta euro (sekitar Rp 458 miliar). Maka, tawaran Milan dianggap terlalu jauh dari harga ideal yang diharapkan Sevilla. Apakah Milan berani memenuhi permintaan Sevilla, masih belum ada kepastian. Jika tak diturunkan, Milan kemungkinan tak jadi membelinya karena sedang kesulitan keuangan. Dikabarkan, beberapa pejabat Milan kini sedang berada di Sevilla. MILAN - Ronaldinho siap menjawab tantangan dari presiden AC Milan Silvio Berlusconi. Dia juga tak keberatan menerima tanggung jawab lebih besar setelah Milan ditinggalkan Kaka. Bahkan mantan bintang Ronaldinho ini optimistis mengantarkan Milan meraih sukses di Liga Champions. "Target kami lebih tinggi musim ini. Musim lalu, kami hanya berharap lolos dari babak kualifikasi. Kini, kami ingin memenanginya," kata Ronaldinho kepada La Gazzetta Dello Sport. "Musim lalu, saya melakukan awal yang bagus. Namun, saya kemudian mengalami cedera. MILAN - Pelatih AC Milan, Leonardo mengaku puas atas kemenangan 2-1 yang diraih atas AC Siena dalam duel perdana Serie-A 2009-2010. Newcastle United captain Steven Taylor is being touted as a possible new recruit for Liverpool, according to a report in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. The news of interest from Rafael Benitez sees the Spaniard join a long list of suitors which also includes Aston Villa's Martin O'Neill and Everton's David Moyes. Taylor has repeatedly spoken out about the chaotic off-field situation enveloping the Magpies squad and hinted that Mike Ashley's inability to sell the club could see further stars follow in the ! footsteps of Obafemi Martins, Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Damian Duff. The news of Liverpool interest comes on the same day that interim boss Chris Hughton has played down speculation linking Taylor with a move to the blue half of Merseyside.
